Well let's see...I have two "bests" that come readily to mind.
The first would have to be the Heywood Wakefield Sectional Sofa found at a remote Pennsylvania Flea Market for $15. And this was about 4-5 years ago when Heywood Wakefield seemed to be peaking.
Also, when I first started collecting I found a Red Orrefors Tulpenglaser Vase at a Modern Design Antique Mall in Washington D.C. for $40.
Those are the MOST memorable and every time I make a great find I always wonder if it will be the last. Something else always seems to thankfully come along.

I just have to add my deluxe find.About a year ago during a trash night hunt in Bklyn.,to my disbelief a lonely coconut chair was sitting by itself waiting to be gobbled up by a sanitation truck.I had to open and close my eyes a few times to make sure I was'nt seeing things. So what if the covering and foam was shot,I still kicked up my heels in joy and promptly lifted and sweated all the way home with a smile on my face. It is hard to top any story where you find something for free, but cheap is really good too. I got three Jacobsen Ant chairs, with labels, from a thrift store for 8 bucks. That was the beginning of my mid-century obsession. I sold them on ebay, by the way, for over $300. I should admit that it was the SALE of the Ant chairs that began my mid-centry obsession.
Good thing Greenville SC is the center of the mod universe!
Or maybe the barwa lounge chair - mint in sealed original box, purchased for very very little, nows up for auction at ebay. If it sells I'll go back to the guy I bought it from and give him some more cash.
Maybe its the 20 vogue picture discs at 2cents each.
hmm... i got one of those kinetic chrome ball floor lamps for 10 bucks at a garage sale, and i'm eyeballing an original Jocobsen egg chair an ottoman at a friends parents house. They have no idea what it is. Is this unethical?
I think mine would be 3 paul Mccobb planner group tables at a thrift store for $2.99 each. I joked with the girl who checked me out that the $2.99 was for all three...right? She smiled and said "This time...why not"
That would have to be...a Nakashima straight-back chair in a thrift store for $5. A killer find. It's in rough shape, someday I'll send it to Mira for refinishing. Suggestions?

Love this thread! Hmm, best finds....Have quite a few: A Paul McCobb Planner Group side table for $3 (Goodwill), 8 Herman Miller shell chairs for $5 with original Herman Miller/Eames metal disks still attatched (Marked down from $10 at a local rummage!). 2 Herman Miller armshell chairs one solid black leather and the other a mint buff colored shell with orange/green/red Girard fabric $5 (Goodwill). This has nothing to do with furniture, but found a painting at Goodwill by a highly regarded South African artist for $1.99, sold it to a gallery in SA for $5000 and not more than 2 weeks later, found another gorgeous painting by a German artist for $4 and sold it locally for $2500. And just last night, a vintage 70's ferrari red Ekornes Stressless lounge chair and ottoman with chrome base at yet again: Goodwill for $50. Gotta love that place!!!!!
Too many to remember. Most recently a Wegner Papa bear chair on the side of the road. Upholstery was in horrid condition and the smell confirmed that a dog did his business in it. Sold it AS IS on Ebay for close to $1000. Why take the time to reupholster when you can get good money as is?
A Heywood Wakefield M166 gateleg table for $75 at a flea market in Florida. It's being refinished.
A wooden lamp with a blonde abstract 'antelope' shape against a darker wood oval for $40 on the 'net. Unknown manufacturer, not even sure if it's 50s or 60s, but has major 'cool' factor and looks great on my HW 2-tier wedge end table.
Merrow Associates furniture useed to be easy to find in the UK, as it was less obvious (no company name or logo or obvious design), so we picked up some items that shift now for £1,000 for around £30.
Sadly, eBay has put paid to that - although some Merrow designs are still hard to pin down.
