I'm not sure what the proper name for these are and I am still searching for a photo. You typically see these in the background of furniture photo shoots. They are square "stack boxes" with rounded corners and open backs. I have seen them made of laminated plywood and also unknown synthetic materials. Frequently they are used just to display items rather than serious storage.

It sounds like you may be referring to the plastic "Square Up" modular storage units designed by Anna Castelli Ferrieri for Kartell. They are still in production in white; see the attached photo.

Somebody told me there is a company called Boom that makes something similar to them but I haven't found any web presence or distributor. I have seen this kind of thing around forever but haven't discovered origin yet.

Exactly...now we are on the right track. I appreciate the find. However, I've seen these things far pre-dating Adler's interpretation. Specifically I've seen basically the same thing in molded plywood. I wonder if anyone can identify where this cube thing originated? I've looked a bit into the big names associated w/ molded plywood and haven't yet found any photos of similar items associated w/ their work to date.
