Does anyone know of a place to buy vacuum pumps at a reasonable price. I'm looking to use the pump for vacuum forming to make plastic lighting. Perhaps a salvaged pump.

Last time I bought one, I found it at a place that sells old lab equipment. That was 1992 before the internet was big. Lots of places on the internet sell them now, but not very cheaply (ex eBay). I've heard stories of people building them from a 110V electic motor and automotive a/c or refrigerator compressor, but don't have any personal experience. If you got to a pick-a-part type junk yard, an automotive a/c compressor should be about $30. If it's a one time project, consider renting one. Last time I checked, US Rentals rents nice big ones for $50.
