I would appreciate any input on who made this and an idea of value. They are marked on the bottom - AE 1966. The display case is made to hang on a wall so the whole set then becomes "art." Thanks- smith
I can not be certain without seeing the actual chess pieces, but I think this set was produced by Austin Enterprises. The company is still in business today. They specialise in table sculptures. I have several Austin pieces from the 60's and 70's, they are of a figural-abstract style.
That's it! Thanks Podboy! Imagine that this sat at my local Goodwill store for 3 weeks in the showcase - waiting for me to see it and pay the $12.99 to buy it..... Thanks again!
Ooooops! I have since seen an identical set which was manufactured by ALCOA Enterprises. I do remember seeing a 'modernist' chess set produced by Austin Productions. However, the chess set in your photo was manufactured by ALCOA Enterprises.
The Chess set was designed by my father. It was one of two sets. I have the first set designed in 1963. They were produced up to 1975. Alcoa was the supplier of extruded Aluminum.
To clarify. Alcoa enterprises does not exist. It is stamped AE 1966 for Austin Enterprises, Wadsworth Ohio. Austin Cox is the designer. His company is no longer operating.
Jon, I have recently acquired one of your father's chess sets from my father's estate. I played with it as a child and have always loved. I was wondering if you can tell me anything more about it. THanks Wendy
Hi there, I once I had set just like these pieces but slightly larger (I think). They were housed in a very similar wood case with the blue lid, except there were two, one for each player. They were stolen from me, and I would really like to replace them. If anyone knows where I can buy a set, I would really appreciate the tip. Jeff JeffH@qka.com
I saw one for auction in Germany to be auctioned off October 6, 2008 and the opening bid was set to be 1850 euro. I just googled the Austin Cox chess and found it, I think.
Thank you for the info Wendy. I actually just sold mine. I sold it for $480.00 on ebay. I had a lot of people watching it so I figured that 1. the market would tell me what the price was worth since so many people were watching and 2. I figured that a lot of people were just curious as to what it WOULD go for. Anyway, I hope that the person that bought it enjoys it. It has never ever been used.
