Hi everyone, hope you can help me. I have been given an Eames side shell rocker in what is apparantely the original Alexander Girard red fabric hopsack. It was from an estate sale in switzerland and had been in the family from new. I have no reason to doubt its provenance but when I turned it over the other day I was curious as to the lack of HM marks on it. Instead there is a small embossed "V" at the base of the shell. I understand that the Zenith productions of these chairs were not embossed with the Herman Miller logo nor the paper stickers and wondered if anyone could help me date this chair or give me any more information about the V mark. The shell is thick and the fibres are really well formed and juicy, but I am thinking I may have to sell one of my chairs soon as we are overrun and this may be the candidate. I don't want to get ripped off as I was told that it is an early one and quite valuable but don't know how to tell.
In addition, the shockmounts do look like the larger ones but someone has been rather careless and glued them badly. There are also four "scars" to the base of the chair which looks like there may have been a different base to it at some point. I will post pics with this post and really hope someone can help me as it's been driving me mad! Many thanks!
