I bought these pieces second hand a decade ago, when I first discovered my passion for mid-century. They are being restored now and my dilemma is determining how much to spend. Are they quality/classic pieces deserving leather and full restoration, or should I go with fabric and just paint the bases black? Does anyone know the designer and/or value? All imput is greatly appreciated.
Typically Eames knockoffs go for about $350 a piece in the LA area, $400-450 if they are part of a set. It would cost about 200-500 a hide depending on the quality and from the looks of it, you would probably need 3 hides to recover both chairs. Not to mention the upholstery fees which would run about 250 per chair.
I would suggest not completely reupholstering it but instead seeing if you can take it to a car upholstery shop and get the original vinyl (if it is indeed vinyl, I can't tell) repaired if there are any rips or worn areas. Or simply have it professionally cleaned.
Thanks comicgeek. I'm still researching websites to see if I can find an exact match for these pieces. So far, no luck, which suprises me because they are extremely well made pieces of furniture.
Indeed, they are Plycraft. The Eames chairs don't recline. I just got a Plycraft and am super-excited about it. So far my rule of thumb is don't spend more than what you can buy another one for.
